Goodness gracious, the movie featured in this episode of Netflix’s MST3K Thanksgiving marathon is one of the worst I’ve seen so far. Released in 1989, “Lords of the Deep” seems like a rushed rip-off of James Cameron’s “The Abyss,” but with like, a thirtieth of the budget. The underwater creatures are cheap enough to make even a novelty store owner blush, and the characters and acting barely register. In other words, it’s exactly the type of movie that makes watching MST3K so much fun, because it comes built-in with bad-movie jokes that make it palatable, and MST3K host Jonah Ray seems much more comfortable with the format than in the previous season. The wrap-around narrative involving Felicia Day and a typically exuberant Patton Oswalt is stronger because it’s more concise, and the show’s running time of 80 minutes per episode means the movies being shown are edited down, which is for the best.
