This Netflix comedy special from the hilarious performer is a significant improvement over her previous one, 2017’s “The Leather Special.” Where “Leather” felt forced and disinterested, “Growing” feels much more sincere. Schumer seems more focused and relaxed despite being in the late stages in pregnancy, and has a number of hilarious observations about her difficult pregnancy, how she’s leaning into domesticity with her husband, and her husband’s autism diagnosis, all done with sharp humor and a commanding screen presence. The jokes are often political without sermonizing or condescension, and there are a number of laugh-out-loud moments that had me gasping for air. This is one of her strongest routines and suggests a refreshed perspective and renewed comedic inspiration.
