The final season of Comedy Central’s wonderfully hilarious sitcom is just as funny as the seasons that have come before, but it’s also blessed with a compelling poignancy that redefines many of the show’s relationships along the way. Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer know just how to play their respective characters at this point and their chemistry remains electrifying, but this time they both expand their range across the season, and it makes for several emotionally powerful moments. There are some series-best episodes to be found here, like “Stories” (which is shot entirely as an Instagram story), “Shenanigans,” and “She-Work and Shit Bucket,” but it’s the last three episodes of the season that stand out the most: There’s a devastated energy flowing just beneath the surface, on the way to one of the most memorable, effective series finales I’ve seen. Fans will love it of course, but even casual viewers would find plenty to appreciate here.
