This televised adaptation of the 2014 comedy of the same name arrives fully formed from the first episode. Taking the basic structure of the movie – namely, that of a group of vampires living in modern-day New York City being followed around by a documentary crew – gives the show a number of opportunities to derive comedic potential without straining into too-clever-for-its-own-good territory. Each member of the ensemble cast is hilarious with roles perfectly tailored to each of their individual strengths, while the writing is the same joke-a-minute structure that served the movie so well. Along the way there are also a number of hilarious cameos and guest stars, in particular a prolonged segment in episode “The Trial” that’s a delight from beginning to end. It’s the kind of show that lends itself extremely well to binge watching even for a non-marathon watcher like myself, and while it may not be for everyone, its intended audience will devour it from the get go.
