Goosebumps (2015)

R.L. Stine’s “Goosebumps” book series was one of my favorite things in the world as a teenager, so it was a delight to see a big-budget theatrical adaptation of the series (in lieu of the enjoyable-but-cheap 1995 television series). Even better, it turns out that director Rob Letterman’s family movie is a solid, effective and imaginative movie in its own right, thanks to well-developed characters and a charismatic, likeable cast. Dylan Minnette and Odeya Rush are well-paired as our two teen leads, who must face an onslaught of monsters come to life from the Goosebumps books, and the ensuing 100 minutes are a dream come true for fans of the series: A large majority of the famous monsters from the series are featured throughout without being parachuted in, and it’s awesome that the filmmakers are actually familiar with the source material and went to great lengths to make sure the series’ audience is catered to. Non-fans of the series can likely find plenty to enjoy thanks to how well-orchestrated everything us, but it’s surely the best-case scenario for fans of the books.
