This episode of Shudder’s horror Christmas marathon is one of my favorite since last year’s revival. First off, there’s the terrific movie choice – 1997’s “Jack Frost” is easily one of the worst horror movies I’ve ever seen, but it’s so much damn fun that you can’t help going along with it. It’s got everything: Terrible framing shots, piss-poor direction, a shoestring budget, a ludicrous concept and terrible acting, often all within the same scene. Like “Troll 2” and “Rock n Roll Nightmare” before it, “Frost” is one of those so-bad-it’s-good movies that deserves a wider recognition outside the horror genre. But what makes this episode all the better is D’arcy the Mail Gail (aka Diana Prince), whose relaxed, casual yet hyper-articulate approach to horror appreciation (not to mention her obvious passionate for her gig on the show and her lovely charisma with Joe Bob Briggs) adds immeasurable pleasure to the episode. There’s a recurring gag involving other horror hosts planning to join the episode that doesn’t quite work all the way, but it did make me think how great it would be to have a similar show with a female host like D’Arcy herself, because the show’s fans and the show’s camera absolutely love her.
