Eight Legged Freaks (2002)

I have to admit, I’m genuinely surprised that “Eight Legged Freaks” doesn’t have much of a fan base to shepherd it along to cult status following its indifferent critical and public reception at the time of its release. Mind you, I avoided it for nearly twenty years myself for some reason so I don’t really know what the issue was with the marketing, but in any case, this is a goddamn blast. David Arquette is perfectly cast as a lovable doofus who has to join forces with Kari Wuhrer as Sheriff Parker as over-sized mutant spiders quickly start taking over their small town. It’s the type of gleefully disreputable B-movie that knows exactly what it is and has a ton of fun with its concept, throwing references ranging from “Them!” to “The Blob” to “Gremlins” while also never taking even one minute to catch its breath, and the whole thing has the pace of a rollercoaster. It’s a shame that the special effects are a bit on the weak side, not so much because they take away anything from the movie but mostly just because things would be even better if the CGI was as first-rate. Nevertheless, there’s plenty of fun to be had for genre fans here, and I hope it gets a second life as a cult classic someday.
